2011 Pentecost Message

“Pentecost”

The name Pentecost comes from a Greek word which means 'fiftieth'.

Ten days after ascension, and 50 days after the resurrection,

the Spirit came.   (… by Mandy Barrow)

(I). What is Pentecost?

Pentecost (Whitsunday) is a major festival in the Christian church.

Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the followers of Jesus, as recorded in the New Testament. Jesus had told them to wait until the Spirit came to them.

(II).Why is the festival called Pentecost?

The festival is often called Pentecost because when the disciples received the Holy Spirit and began to go out and preach about Jesus it was the Jewish festival of Pentecost.

Pentecost is recognized as the birth of the Christian Church. The Apostle Peter preached a sermon which resulted in 3,000 people becoming believers.

Think about it:

Pentecost is recognized as the birthday of the church,

God gives us so many wonderful gifts and the church is one of them.

Think about it:  What do you like about the church? On this birthday of the church, what's special to you about it?

The next question is: We are now entering the Season of Pentecost.

As you prepare to intentionally receive the gifts God comes to give, ... by entering into a relationship with God….. by what???? Pray about it and God will guide you through.
